about

Slips of the Tongue was recorded primarily by Mike Zirkel (2011 Best Studio Sound Engineer, Madison Area Music Awards) at Smart Studios in Madison, WI. Owned by Butch Vig of Garbage, who, notably just produced the Foo Fighters' 2012 Grammy award-winning album Wasting Light, Smart is best known as where Nirvana recorded parts of Nevermind and Smashing Pumpkins recorded Gish.

In order to achieve the specific sound she was going for, Katie enlisted the help of an all-star cast of musicians from her home state of Wisconsin as well as several of East Tennessee's best known Americana artists, including bassist Bryn Davies, who currently tours with Jack White after a long stint with up and comer Justin Townes Earle, but who has also recorded with such luminaries as Guy Clark, Tony Rice Unit, Patty Griffin, and others, and appeared on Saturday Night Live, as well as David Letterman. Jill Andrews, Josh Oliver, and Tom Pryor form the rest of the Tennessee contingent, names you might recognize as members of the former everybodyfields. Tom is currently a member of the Black Lillies, and has made more than a handful of appearances on the Grand Ole Opry and CMT.

The Tennessee portions of her album were recorded at Elgang Studios in Knoxville, which is the recording studio of Scott Minor, former drummer of the now defunct Sparklehorse. The fact that such talented folks enthusiastically climbed on board to participate in her debut album is a testament to the fact that her singing and songwriting are really something special.
In her short musical career, Katie has shared bills with Tony Rice, Del McCoury Band, Yonder Mountain String Band, Langhorne Slim, Jill Andrews, David Mayfield Parade, and many others. Her singing and harmonies have been likened to Gillian Welch (Isthmus, Madison, WI) and Gram Parsons (City Paper, Rochester, NY.) Her forthcoming album, however, marks a shift in genre for Powderly, deepening her sound from simple folk music to something described as hauntingly beautiful (Isthmus, Madison, WI) and David Lynch-y (Flying Rooster, Chapel Hill, NC) exceptional enough in quality to establish her as "one of Madison's most promising musical talents" (Isthmus, Madison, WI.)

With the release of her debut full-length album out on her indie label, Red-Winged Blackbird Records, LLC, Katie sold all of her belongings and is moving into an RV, in which she will travel all 50 states in a tour entitled "From Sea to Shining Sea," which kicked off in April of 2012 in Knoxville, TN, at the Rhythm N' Blooms festival.

It is an unconventional approach to touring on an album, but Powderly insists that she would like to actually see the country as she travels our nation's highways to get to the taverns and barrooms she will be performing in. She says that this idea was inspired by the Simon and Garfunkel tune, America.

"I want to combine my love of playing music with my search for America. I love our country and want to take the time to see it, to get to know it." So when she comes to your town, be sure not to miss her. You never know if she’ll be coming back this way again.

Katie Powderly Madison, Wisconsin

Katie Powderly’s music permeates the boundaries of genre, inhabiting a space somewhere between alt-country and folk. Track Name: All the King's Horses
You think I'm looking for the sun
You say I see it in your eyes
But I'm a language you don't speak
You underestimate me all the time

It's always raining in my room
The clouds came up from Tennessee
But still I let you into my head
I like it when you're all around me

Chorus:
You think that I'm looking for the sun
You're not my redemption
You are not the only one for me
But you refuse to see

You keep your cards close to your chest
Think twice before you lay one down
You think I see just what you show me, but baby I got cards of my own

Like Humpty Dumpty you fell down
Broke into pieces of a man
That no on could put back again
Not even the King's horses and his men

Chorus:
You think that I'm looking for the sun
You're not my redemption
You are not the only one for me
But you refuse to see

Bridge:
That I'm broken just like you
And I can't undo the damage done
I have cried infinite tears
I'm in love but I'm so tired of waiting for all these years
Cause he may never come around

Now you and I are said and done
We both lost the games you played
So go and leave me in the spring
I'm not the kind of girl who wants a ring

Chorus:
You think that I'm looking for the sun
You're not my redemption
You are not the only one for me
But you refuse to see
Track Name: Blue
I wrote a song for you
You sang it back to me
Word for word
You're just like a bird
In the spring

I shut my window
Cause it's too much
I can feel your touch
Against my skin
I let you in

Chorus:
Keep in touch because
It makes our goodbyes less abrupt
And our memories
Less like dreams

You send me lines
From time to time
From where you are
Always too far
Away from me

It's Willie Nelson
And stormy nights
And that dress you like
Sunglasses, too
I wear for you

Chorus:
Keep in touch because
It makes our goodbyes less abrupt
And our memories
Less like dreams

You say my daddy
Would be so mad
Cause you make me sad
But I choose you
I choose blue

Chorus:
Keep in touch because
It makes our goodbyes less abrupt
And our memories
Less like dreams
Keep in touch because
It makes our goodbyes less abrupt
And our memories
Less like dreams
Track Name: Tables, Turning
I can't win this game we're playing
I lay down all my cards every single time
There's nothing in my hands, but still I'm grasping
Hoping for another sign

You are secret codes I must interpret
You scatter clues around for me to see
On hands and knees I crawl picking up pieces
Still convinced that I'm lucky

Chorus:
I get so tired
Waiting for these tables to turn
You are a lesson
I just can't seem to learn

You seldom ask for what you really want
Instead expecting me to read your mind
This game of cat and mouse just leaves me empty
While you are leaving me behind

I cling to every little thing you offer
Comforting myself with every word
I search for signs in songs but come up empty
Cause I can never quite be sure

Chorus:
I get so tired
Waiting for these tables to turn
You are a lesson
I just can't seem to learn

Competing for your heart I am your captive
Bursting into flames of jealousy
So I give you more than what you ask for
Except the chance to miss me

Chorus:
I get so tired
Waiting for these tables to turn
You are a lesson
I just can't seem to learn
Track Name: Bridges, Burning
I know you tried
To do the right thing
But she had her intentions
And that hemline was tempting

Your eye contact lingered
From across a crowded room
And fire that's not controlled
Will eventually consume

Chorus:
May the bridges you burn light your way
May the bridges you burn light your way
Create an artificial day

Somehow you're able
To justify your compromise
It's just this once you tell yourself
While you rehearse your lies

Water under your burning bridge
The flames are growing high
Water under your burning bridge
Illuminate the sky

Chorus:
May the bridges you burn light your way
May the bridges you burn light your way
Create an artificial day

Who knew she'd get jealous
Confess your sins out of spite
Your pretty apple's filled with poison
But you've swallowed a bite

Your guilt makes you sweat
Beads form on your furrowed brow
A serpent returns to a garden
Discreetly as night will allow

Chorus:
May the bridges you burn light your way
May the bridges you burn light your way
Create an artificial day

I know you tried
To do the right thing
Track Name: Hot Air Balloon
You are a lonely star
Hung in an empty sky
I wonder how you are

It's gravitational
Like the moon and tide
I can feel your pull

You reach for me
And then you pull away
As sure as night
Leans up to kiss the day

In your room crickets sing
Our summer lullaby
I whisper everything

My blanket on your bed
Your flowered sheet
Rainbow beneath your head

The sun pours in
Into my kitchen
Through the back door
And spills on my floor

Inhale like a hot air balloon
Loose in the air so high
I'd like to come down soon

My patchwork quilts of songs
Love letter on a map
You make me wait so long

When things feel right you run
Recede into your songs
In the key of regret
And everything is wrong

But you can come to me
No more goodbyes
I guess we'll wait and see

I will wait for you
I will hold my breath
Til I turn blue

I will wait
I will wait for you
I will wait
I will wait for you

I will wait for you
I will hold my breath
Til I turn blue
Track Name: Let Me Go
Good morning, says the equinox, as thunder wakes me before my alarm clocks
Burrow into bed deeply as I'm able
Make my coffee all alone, can't stop looking at my telephone
I miss his handwriting in the crossword on the table

There are ghosts in these rooms and it'll be my doom if I meet one face to face
I'm haunted by the echo of his boots down my front stairwell
The doorknob turns and my stomach churns but it's never him returning
I hallucinate the sound of tables, turning

Chorus:
So let me go
Let me go
I've got to go
I've got to go
Just because I have to leave you
Doesn't mean that I don't love you

Seems like everything I had here
One by one just disappeared
You say that once upon a time
I'd crack a smile

That there's proof I used to laugh
But those are memories in old photographs
Things haven't seemed very funny for a while

Chorus:
So let me go
Let me go
I've got to go
I've got to go
I've got to go
I've got to go
Just because I have to leave you
Doesn't mean that I don't love you
Track Name: Carry Me, Hold Me
The barroom lights still twinkle and shine
Just like they did when you were mine
But those days have come
And those days have passed

But the men here still wink and ask me to dance
And while we whirl whisper words of romance
They ask me, sweet baby
What's that sad look in your eyes?

Chorus:
I'm tired of being so strong
I want someone to carry me
Don't you betray me and decide
That you want to marry me
All I'm asking from you
Is for you to hold me
And when you realize that I'm leaving
Don't say she never told me

But things just don't seem to work out that way
They always come looking for more the next day
They're askin for something
That I just can't give

Some bide their time, convinced that I'll change
Some say, for a woman, that I act awful strange
But they don't understand me
And they never will

Chorus:
I'm tired of being so strong
I want someone to carry me
Don't you betray me and decide
That you want to marry me
All I'm asking from you
Is for you to hold me
And when you realize that I'm leaving
Don't say she never told me

There's only one man who has had my heart
And when it got broken I guess I got smart
I said I'll be damned
If I do that again

Chorus:
I'm tired of being so strong
I want someone to carry me
Don't you betray me and decide
That you want to marry me
All I'm asking from you
Is for you to hold me
And when you realize that I'm leaving
Don't say she never told me
Cause you know that I told you
Track Name: Lullabye
Close your eyes and drift away
Don't you fear the dark of night
The setting of the sun
Allows the moon to shed its light

When the moon plays hide and seek
You can always spy a star
To give you a playful wink
Show you exactly where you are

And if your star should fall
And you find your friends are gone
Hug your knees a little tighter
And wait patiently for dawn

(It won't be dark for long)

When your eyes finally open
I'll be so very far from here
I told the breeze to say I love you
When she whispers in your ear
Track Name: Yet to Come
I cannot be satisfied
Until I'm sleeping at your side
Without a thousand miles of pavement
In between us

Your glasses on my bedside table
Love you the best that I am able
Never grow tired
Of your perfect face

Chorus:
I wear out every metaphor
Trying to describe the way
My head feels on your chest
I listen to your heartbeat
Knowing that the best
Of all our days are yet to come

I want all your time I don't want to share
I don't give a damn if it's not fair
But I guess that's just
Cause I'm an only child

I like the way you say my name
Like it's a promise you can keep, no more games
No more is you is
Or ain't my baby

Chorus:
I wear out every metaphor
Trying to describe the way
My head feels on your chest
I listen to your heartbeat
Knowing that the best
Of all our days are yet to come

A thousand hours on the telephone
You wreak havoc on my comfort zone
But we both decide to gamble
One last time

There's no one that I care to meet
No eyes I search on crowded streets
These thoughts of you
They've colonized my mind

Chorus:
I wear out every metaphor
Trying to describe the way
My head feels on your chest
I listen to your heartbeat
Knowing that the best
Of all our days are yet to come
